Oprah parties it up in Sydney

Oprah Winfrey partied through her first night in Sydney after being reunited with her 302-strong American entourage at a harbourside cocktail soiree.
The US chat queen vowed to down tequila shots at the Botanic Gardens bash on Saturday evening after revealing she had warmed up with a bottle of VB in her hotel room earlier.
The beach-themed party, hosted by NSW Premier Kristina Kenneally, featured live music from Guy Sebastian and a spectacular fireworks display over the water which culminated in the lighting of a red O' on the Harbour Bridge.
Oprah said she felt instantly welcomed by Sydney in keeping with the fevered reception she has encountered in other areas of Australia on her trip, including Hamilton Island, Uluru and Friday's visit to Melbourne with Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
'The lifestyle, the scenery, it's all really fantastic and I get a great view of it from my bedroom from the hotel,' she told journalists from Sydney's Botanic Gardens.
'I just love it and my highlight is the people really... I just feel absolutely embraced by the people, so much so that I said to the prime minister, Do you all have friendly school to go to?', and I really do mean that, it seems to be genuine friendly.
'It's like everyone went to Disney class.'
Resembling one of the city's Rosella birds in a colourful Camilla Franks gown, Oprah wasted no time in bonding with her party guests following a quick chat with Ms Kenneally.
She cajoled the crowd into posing for a mass photograph against the backdrop of Sydney Opera House, from where two episodes of The Oprah Winfrey Show will be recorded on Tuesday.
The private event was the first time Oprah has appeared alongside all 302 of her travelling fans since she sparked scenes of hysteria by inviting them to Australia during one of her shows.
Since touching down on Wednesday, they have fanned out to a variety of tourist destinations to help promote Australia to a worldwide audience, mainly the lucrative American market.
Ms Kenneally said transforming the city's most iconic landmark into the 'Sydney Oprah House' over four days would provide a noticeable shot in the arm.
'Once again Sydney will shine before the world and Sydney is the number one tourist destinations for visitors in Australia,' she said.
'When Sydney does well then Australia does well.'
Oprah will retire from television at the end of the current series, but has promised to return Down Under after falling in love with the country

Eight foods you should not eat

If you want to add years to your life there are certain foods and ingredients you should not eat. Eating these certain foods are harmful to your health and well being. Such foods are all either man - made or man altered. Eating and drinking them on a regular basis will take away years from your life and guarantee that the years you are left with will be riddled with sickness, disease and very likely obesity. The foods I’m taking about are processed foods. Below is a list of foods that you should avoid as much as possible if you want to live a long and healthy life.
Soda: Regular soda or diet is acidic to our bodies. It takes 32 cups of water to neutralize the acid in just one can of soda in your body. All of this acid in your body puts a tremendous strain on your kidneys. Your body also uses its own alkaline minerals (calcium from your bones and magnesium from your muscles) to help neutralize the acid. This can eventually lead to osteoporosis, weak muscles, tooth decay and brittle bones that fracture easily. Soda also contains the worst form of sugar in the world which is high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Diet soda has large amounts of aspartame a type of artificial sweetener which has been known to cause Cancer in lab test and many other health issues.
Aspartame: Aspartame is usually known by the brand names Equal or Nutrasweet and are poisonous to our bodies. Some documented side effects of aspartame are eye damage such as blindness or decreased vision, blurring, eye pain and dry eyes. Having nerve problems such as seizures, headaches, migraines, memory loss. Aspartame can also cause heart palpitations, shortness of breath and high blood pressure. Digestive issues such as diarrhea, nausea and stomach pain and ulcers. Aspartame has been know to cause skin and allergies issues, endocrine and metabolic issues. The most severe effects of aspartame poisoning are death, irreversible brain damage, birth defects, including mental retardation. Splenda is no better than aspartame. Splenda can cause headaches, rashes anxiety, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, depression, memory loss, moody, seizures, and chest and body pains. A great alternative to aspartame and Splenda is Stevia. Stevia is all natural, non-calorie sweetener that is healthy for you as well.
Farmed salmon: Farmed salmon is lower in vitamin D than fresh caught and higher in contaminants such as carcinogens, PCBs, and pesticides like dioxin and DDT. If you like to eat Salmon eat wild-caught fish, not farm-raised.
• High fructose corn syrup
: High Fructose corn syrup is found in just about every product on the market today. From sodas to cough syrup you will find HFCS are one of the ingredients that are in them. Try to find alternative products and foods that don’t contain HFCS in them. Most organic foods and products don’t have HFCS in them.
Hydrogenated oils: Hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils contain trans-
fatty acids, which are fats that are not found in nature, and that your body CAN NOT metabolize. They accumulate, clog your arteries and cause inflammation. Hydrogenated oil is used by the food industry for the  sole purpose of prolonging the shelf life of foods, in other words to maximize profits. Hydrogenated oils are referred to as the Silent Killer. “Trans fat is responsible for at least 500 deaths from heart disease in NYC each year.” (1) These bad fats are found in deep fried foods, margarine, baked goods, and most processed packaged foods. Be aware and read labels, Look for the words “Hydrogenated” or “Partially hydrogenated” on package labels. If you see them, do NOT purchase the product.
Nitrite cured meats: If you eat hot dogs, bacon, ham, luncheon meats, corned beef, smoked fish or any other type of processed meat; you are most likely consuming nitrites. Cured meats made with sodium nitrite or sodium nitrate have been found to contribute to a variety of negative health effects. Nitrates
can be converted into nitrosamines, which are potent cancer-causing chemicals, in your body. If you are concerned about nitrites and want to avoid them in your diet, you must cut out most all foods that contain them such as, hot dogs, luncheon meats, sausages, bacon, and processed meats.
Processed foods: Processed foods are extremely unhealthy and loaded with chemicals and preservatives that your body was never meant to ingest. Processed foods include all packaged foods in boxes, cans, jars, bags or frozen cartons that contain ingredients other than a basic food. Although the appeal behind them is convenience and indefinite shelf life they are harmful to your health because, they make you toxic by adding to the waste pile, they don’t nourish you, even though your stomach may be physically full, the body thinks it still needs more food because it hasn’t gotten nourished from what is in the stomach, they use up digestive energy, they contain no water to transport nutrients or carry away waste from your body like veggies and fruit do. They make you fat!
Tap water: Regular (unfiltered) tap water is acidic and contains toxins like fluoride and chlorine. No matter what you read or hear in the news, you should try to avoid drinking tap water. The best sources of alkaline water are distilled water or filtered water using reverse osmosis.  What's best for our body, are real foods. Real foods are not processed or minimally processed. I have one rule of thumb "If man made it, don't eat it." Real foods are alive and filled with natural nutrients. They will help you live disease free well into your golden years.

Ten useful Apple iPad tips, tricks

Using Apple’s iPad isn’t exactly rocket science, but if you didn’t take the time to read the owner’s manual, here are some quick and neat tips and tricks that can help you get the most out of your tablet.

1. Open Safari links in a new page

Remember that you can have multiple webpages loaded in Safari simultaneously. So if you’re not sure about a link or want to keep your current page open, you can open the link in a new window (a little like tabbed browsing, but without the tabs).

To do this, rather than just tap the link, press and hold it until you see an option to “Open in New Page”, hit this, and Safari will open a new window and load that link.

To manage the pages you have open or to return to another page, look to the top of the browser and there you’ll see an icon that looks like two overlapping boxes or pages. If you press the icon, it will show you all the pages you have open (just like in the graphic below). From here you can tap any of the “X” buttons to close an individual page.

2. Activate AutoFill in Safari

The AutoFill option is a great time saver for anyone who knows and trusts anyone else who might use their iPad, as it automatically remembers your usernames and passwords for services.

To activate it, ensure your details are saved in “Contacts”, then head to “Settings”, choose “Safari”, and click “AutoFill” and then set both options to “On” and select your file from “Contacts” in the “My Info” field.

3. Quick mute your iPad

Although the iPad has no “mute” option, you can still quickly silence your device by pressing and holding the down volume button — this quickly drops the volume down to zero in about two seconds.

4. Make use of the home button

The iPad’s “Home” button will take you to your homepage if pressed once, but it has a few other functions worth knowing about as well.

To access these functions, go to “Settings,” press “General”, then choose “Home”. Here you can select which function you’d like a double press of the button to carry out, such as opening up “Spotlight Search” or accessing the iPod.

From this area in “Settings” you can also set “iPod Controls” to “On”, which will mean when you have music playing and you’re in another program or app, a double press of the “Home” button will bring up basic music controls.

5. Add a website shortcut to your home screen

There is a quick way to add shortcuts to your favorite sites directly to your home screen.

Head to the webpage you want to create the shortcut to, tap the “+” sign at the top of the page and select “Add to Home Screen”. This will then create a shortcut icon offering one-click access to your most-used sites.

6. Make iBooks more user-friendly

The iBooks app’s swipe-to-turn the page function is really nice when you first play with it, but the truth is (and it’s especially true if you’re a fast reader) it gets a little old if you’re settling down to read more than a few pages.

You can tweak iBook’s settings to offer a shortcut to go to the next page, if you simply tap the left margin.

To make this the case, head to “Settings”, then under the “Apps” section, press “iBooks”, then “Tap Left Margin” and make sure “Next Page” is ticked, which will change it from the default option — the previous page.

7. Activate iPod sound check

You know how annoying it is when your songs play at different volume levels, leaving you either scrambling to get across the room to turn it down, or sighing with frustration as an inaudible track comes on? Well there’s a way to stop that from happening.

All you need do is navigate yourself to “Settings”, click “iPod” and then turn “Sound Check” to “On”, which will help regulate volume levels.

Oh, and while you’re there, take note of the “EQ” menu that offers a tonne of different sound options depending on the style of music you’re listening to, or you can regulate sound levels for spoken words to help optimise sound for podcasts or audio-books.

8. Squeeze six apps into the dock

Until iOS4.2 arrives in November, bringing with it the joy of folders, there are a few ways to help organise your apps and make items you use often more accessible.

You can have 11 pages to arrange your apps on, so although there’s no way to make a games folder, for example, you could drag and drop all your games apps onto one page to create a themed “games” page.

Also, the dock can have up to six apps in it, so you can pick two more than the standard layout offers (just touch an app until it wiggles then drag it into the dock to move it) to make more items closer to hand from any screen.

9. Use a space bar trick

In addition to the keyboard shortcuts, tips and tricks previously brought to you for iOS devices, there is one more spacebar trick to share.

The spacebar will create as many spaces as there are fingers on it, so one finger will produce one space, two fingers two spaces and so on.

We can’t see that this is going to be the most useful trick you’ll ever learn, but it’s interesting if for no other reason than to see how the Apple engineers had fun with the display’s multi-touch capabilities.

Preventing The Middle Aged Spread

If you have found controlling your weight harder as you have gotten older you are not alone. Data from the most recent Australian surveys show that we do indeed get fatter as we get older. Obesity figures peak at around the 50-59 year old age group, affecting some 24% of men and 30% of women. Making matters worse is that this weight gain tends to accumulate around the middle - hence the term "middle-age spread" - and this pattern of fat distribution carries an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure.

Women tend to notice the most dramatic changes to their waistline around the menopausal years. Hormones can be blamed at least in part. They can't be blamed for the excess fat laid down, but hormones are involved in changing where you store any excess fat. Oestrogen levels drop by some 90% during menopause and this change in the balance of hormones means that women tend to take on a more male pattern of fat distribution - less on the hips, thighs and limbs and more around the waist. This is one reason why the risk of heart disease in women increases after menopause and becomes similar to that for men. In men the changes may have been more subtle with waistlines slowly expanding over the years. You may suddenly notice how overweight you have become, but don't really know how or when it happened. So why does this happen and is there any way to prevent middle age spread?

The first thing to realise and accept is that middle-age spread is not inevitable, nor is the cause any different to weight gain at any other time of life. Aside from the change in fat distribution for women, the basic laws of biology apply: if you have gained weight over the last few years you have been consuming more kilojoules than you have been expending. It just feels like middle-age spread because that is when your expended waistline becomes noticeable - in fact it has been creeping up on you for many years. The average weight gain is around 0.5kg (1lb) a year - it doesn't seem like a lot, but 10 years later you weigh 5kg more. If this continues by the time you reach middle age you may well find you weigh in excess of 10 kilograms more than you did in your 20s. There are several reasons why we experience this slow weight gain:

1. As we age we slowly lose muscle, primarily because we don't use it. This is turn slows our metabolic rate and so we burn less energy every minute of every day.
2. Secondly we continue to eat the same amount of food, sometimes more, with business lunches, socialising around food and perhaps greater affluence allowing for more meals eaten out.
3. We tend to move less - both in terms of more formal exercise and in day to day activity. This can be a time factor and/or it can be linked to more health problems or aches and pains making you feel less like being active as you get older.

Interestingly for women in particular there is also a psychological side to middle-age weight gain. The Women's Health Australia Study followed 900 women over a three year period as they experienced menopause. The researchers found differences in behaviour and lifestyle between those women who gained weight and those who didn't. Of little surprise is that the women who avoided weight gain were more likely to have cut back on high fat foods, but they were also less likely to eat in response to emotions such as anger, anxiety and depression. It seems that particularly during the menopause, a time of psychological change that affects some women more than others, finding non-food ways of dealing with negative emotions is important if weight gain is to be avoided.

What can we do about it?
There is no magic to weight loss at any age; the answer lies in five words - eat less and move more. While the philosophy is simple, as anyone who has tried to lose weight and keep it off knows full well that putting it into practice is much more difficult. But understanding how we burn and store fat can help to form the most effective approach to both preventing weight gain and losing weight in middle age
The myth of the "fat-burning zone"
The body burns two major fuels at rest and during exercise - fat and glucose (carbohydrate). But there is no switch from one to the other, rather there is always a mixture of the two. What does change is the ratio of fat to glucose being used. At low compared to high intensities of exercise the percentage of energy drawn from fat will be higher. This knowledge led to the widespread use in exercise circles of the "fat-burning zone". Many fitness instructors still use this and calculate from your age, the best heart rate for you to work at to burn fat. It might sound a solid scientific way to increase fat burning but there is a serious flaw to the theory. While at lower intensities you might burn a higher proportion of fat, the total amount of energy you expend is less and therefore the total fat you use up is also likely to be less. Furthermore in the post-exercise period we continue to burn fat and in fact after working out at higher intensities this post-exercise fat burning is greater than following a lower intensity workout. To illustrate this let's consider two workouts; you plan a 30 minute exercise session - will you burn more fat by walking, keeping your heart rate in the "fat-burning zone", or by increasing the intensity and jogging?

Walking does indeed use a higher proportion of fat; in this example 60% of the total energy comes from fat. This decreases to 40% of the total energy when we increase the intensity to a jog. However because jogging uses more energy in total, the amount of fat used up remains almost the same. Furthermore because the total energy expenditure is greater when jogging you use up more of your glucose stores. In the first few hours after the exercise session your body then works on restocking these stores from incoming food. Meanwhile the body continues to burn fat to support the ongoing energy requirements. After the lower intensity workout this happens to a far less extent since less total energy was expended. In other words it's not just how much fat and energy in used up during the exercise session, but how much fat is used up in total during and after exercise

So forget about a fat-burning zone. Rather work as hard as you can for the time that you have. Of course don't work so hard that you only keep it up for a short length of time - you need to keep the time the same. Alternatively you can work at the lower intensity but do it for longer….but for those that already struggle to find the time to exercise, working out at a higher intensity is the effective route to results.

The best fat burning exercises

1. Lifting weights
One of the reasons for middle age spread is that we lose muscle as we age resulting in a declining metabolic rate. It's not therefore surprising that lifting weights to maintain, or ideally to increase, your muscle mass can dramatically reduce the gain in body fat over time. A study of 164 American overweight women found that those who weight trained twice a week over a two-year period decreased their body fat percentage by 3.7%, while the control group who did no weight training experienced no change. Furthermore the weight-training group significantly reduced the typical gain in fat around the middle - they experienced a gain of 7% in intra-abdominal fat compared to 21% in the control group. Convincing evidence that lifting weights really can help to reduce middle-age spread.
How to do it:
Join a health club and have a weight training program designed for you using gym equipment
Find a personal trainer who will design and supervise your strength training workout. They may use a gym or bring their own equipment to work with you in your own home or outdoors.
Use a home workout DVD incorporating resistance exercises using your body weight (can be just as effective as using weights) e.g. push-ups, or using a resistance training band.

2. Cardio exercise

Any exercise that raises your heart rate and gets you puffing and panting works the cardiovascular system - hence the term cardio exercise. This form of exercise is where you can push the intensity of your workout and expend the most amount of energy in a session. The more intense the workout, the more kilojoules are burned, so aim to work hard with the time you have. This doesn't mean you have go running - if you a newcomer to exercise a brisk walk may feel hard, but as you get fitter you will find you can increase the pace and keep the exercise challenging. Whatever the mode of exercise use a scale of 0-10 to help you work at the right level - 0 is at complete rest and 10 is extremely hard. Aim to work at around 7-8 ie hard enough to have you puffing but not so hard you couldn't keep it up for very long.
How to do it:

Walking, jogging and running are hard to beat for cardio exercise. What's more they are free (after the cost of a decent pair of shoes) and can be done at any time. This is ideal for busy people who struggle to find the time to work out. While running may not be an option for many reasons including bad backs, knees or being very overweight, almost everyone will benefit from walking. Set yourself a time or distance and aim to complete it at least every other day.
Cycling is another good option although you obviously need to invest in a bike and helmet to get started. Alternatively look for an indoor cycling class, or use the stationary bikes at your local health club or leisure centre. Cycling is non-weight bearing and therefore can be ideal for those with joint pain who struggle with walking or jogging. However make sure to get some advice from a professional to ensure you are set up correctly on the bike to avoid back or knee pain.
Cardio machines - either on the gym floor or for home use provide a convenient means of getting a cardio workout indoors. These include bikes, treadmills, cross-trainers, stair-climbers and rowing machines. Each has its own advantages and so a combination of equipment is best. Be wary of splurging on an expensive piece of equipment for home. More often than not these end up gathering dust and taking up space in the corner of the room when the novelty wears off. You are far better off joining a health club with a variety of equipment to enable you to vary your routine and prevent boredom setting in.

Yoga
Yoga is usually thought of in relation to flexibility or stress-relief rather than fat-burning, but a US study of 15,500 middle-aged men and women found that yoga may help to prevent middle-age spread in normal-weight people and may promote weight loss in those who are overweight. The normal-weight men and women who regularly practised yoga (at least 30 minutes one or more times a week) gained less weight over the study period of 10 years, than those who didn't practice yoga. The results were more impressive for those who were overweight - those who practised yoga lost weight over the 10 years while those who didn't gained over 6kg. What is interesting about this study is that the results cannot simply be due to how much fat or total energy is burned by the exercise since most forms of yoga are not sufficiently aerobic to burn a serious amount of kilojoules. The authors speculate that it is the psychological side of yoga that may elicit the effect. Yoga involves building an inner strength, sometimes through a form of meditation, and develops body awareness. The theory is that together these factors help you to find the inner strength and resourcefulness to stick with a healthy eating plan and to respect your body enough to feed it well. Whatever the reasons there seems little to lose with so many other benefits to this form of exercise.
How to do it:
Look for a good yoga school in your area and experiment with different styles until you find one you like - some are more physically demanding where others may be of a more meditative nature.
Most health clubs and leisure centres now run yoga classes, although often these are taught by fitness instructors who have learned yoga rather than experienced yoga masters who have practised for many years. As a result they may not remain as true to the original practice. Ask about the qualifications of the instructor if you are not sure.
Practise in the comfort of your own home. You can either buy an instructional DVD or practise the moves you have learned in class

Selling erections on the internet

When it comes to the family jewels, it's not just about size, it's also about stiffness. Men take great pride in a strong erection. If you're a guy who's having a few problems getting 'it' up, down there, you may not wish to admit it, even to a doctor.
You might even be tempted to buy erectile dysfunction (ED) medicines on the internet. But did you know internet medicines are often dangerous fakes? And that problems in the erection department may also mean diabetes, heart disease and other serious health conditions?

Cyber mafia
Buying ED treatments online is an appealing option for many men who want convenience or are embarrassed to talk to their doctor. Unfortunately manufacturers of counterfeit (fake) ED drugs exploit these vulnerabilities and make a fortune selling ineffective and/or dangerous medicines online at the expense of men's health.
Medications used to treat ED (they're called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors) are pricey. Even when purchased from cheap internet sites, they cost a lot more than antibiotics and other types of medicines.
Manufacturers of fake drugs sold on the internet keep production costs down (often by using ingredients like talcum powder, which are cheap but completely ineffective). They sell the drugs at expensive prices, and make up to 2000% profit. It's estimated that manufacturers of fake ED treatments make ten times as much as heroin dealers!
Business is booming in PDE-5 land
With profits like that, it's little wonder that the sale of fake ED medications has increased so much in recent years. Counterfeit medicines sales have increased by almost 400%, and most of this growth is thought to be because of ED medicines alone.
PDE-5 inhibitors were only approved for sale in the late 1990s, so use of legitimate PDE-5 inhibitors has also increased in recent years. However, these medications have also becomes the most common type of counterfeit drug on the market. In Europe it's estimated that 2.5 million men buy ED treatments online (the same number as purchase them from legitimate sources like pharmacies).

The dangerous underworld of ED drug dealing
Many men have put their lives at risk – and some have even lost their lives – by taking fake ED drugs. In Australia, these fakes are mostly purchased on the internet.
Fake ED medications can be unhealthy or dangerous for many reasons. Some fake ED treatments contain ingredients which are poisonous. Poisons can be common ingredients (e.g. printer ink for dye), but also include medicines which should not be taken by and can cause life threatening health conditions for the average Joe.
For example, 150 men were hospitalised and 4 died after taking fake ED medication in Singapore. The ED treatment contained a medicine usually taken by diabetics. The medicine is safe for diabetics, but not for healthy men. It caused the men in Singapore (and one in Australia) to develop a life threatening condition called hypoglaceamia (low blood sugar).

A bitter pill to swallow
Medicines may also be dangerous if they contain too much of the right medicine, or ineffective if they contain not enough medicine (or none at all). Men who take these ineffective medicines will continue having erection problems – and that is by no means a small problem. It often leads to depression, problems with self-esteem and relationship problems.
Men who continue struggling to get their old fella up after taking their medicine don't necessarily go to a doctor. In fact they may be discouraged from doing so, still embarrassed and perhaps think treatment won't work for them, after their internet failure.
Regardless of whether the drug has an effect, men who purchase online without consulting a doctor (about 30% of men who buy ED medicines from the internet) are putting their health and their lives at risk. It sounds dramatic, but the hidden dangers of online ED treatments go much deeper than the odd deadly outbreak of hypoglaecemia, the condition which hospitalised 150 men in Singapore
What's going on in the closet?
All men with ED put their health at risk when they keep their condition in the closet. This is true even if they are lucky enough to get the good imitation medicine from the internet (but beware, only about 10% of fakes are even similar to the medicine they purport to copy).
Erection problems usually occur because of underlying problems with the way blood is transported through the body. Really, it's that boring and scientific. Even if your mates insist a good hard penis is a sign of manhood and sexual ability, all it really signifies is well functioning veins and arteries.
That's not to say well functioning arteries and veins aren't important. They do far more than transport the necessary blood down there, to help get your old fella up at the appropriate moments.

Gangs of health disorders

Transporting blood around the body is a vital function. Problems with blood pressure (e.g. hypertension), heart conditions and metabolic conditions like diabetes mellitus are all more likely if your veins and arteries aren't functioning properly. And these conditions don't just cause problems for your sex life, they also put your life at risk.
So it's not surprising that doctors test men for these conditions when they report erection problems. Men who buy medicines online without consulting a doctor not only put themselves at risk of buying dangerous or ineffective medications, they also miss the opportunity to have checks for heart problems, diabetes and other conditions which commonly occur alongside erectile dysfunction.
Men who are already being treated for these conditions (or others) put themselves at risk of dangerous drug interactions. Some medicines just don't mix, and men who don't speak to their doctor, or take fake medicines with unknown ingredients, just don't know.

But how do I know if she's faking it?

Sometimes it's hard to spot a fake. But when it comes to online ED treatments, there are some simple rules which can help you identify frauds.
If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Cheap medicines and miracle promises are probably fakes.
If the online seller doesn't provide an address or the name of a pharmacist the medicine may well be from a dodgy source. If it's a prescription medicine and you don't need a prescription? You guessed it. Most likely a fake.
You may be able to get it without talking to a doctor, but if you approach your doctor, you'll probably find the experience isn't so bad. That your doctor treats your erection problem, well, just like any other health problem – as a health issue which needs to be resolved.

Get it up the right way
A strong erection is something most men are proud of. But if you're having problems getting it up, don't let pride get in the way of talking to your doctor. Achieving a strong erection doesn't have to mean putting your health at risk.
Buying ED treatments with a doctor's prescription not only means you'll get the right medicine, it also means you'll get the checks and balances you need. Online medicines may seem cheap and easy, but there are many hidden costs lurking in the closet. It's not just your erection which will suffer, it's your entire health.

The real red hot!

While we all know that scouring kitchen shelves for a beauty solution can have great benefits, the latest kitchen product to make it to the beauty list can leave many women stumped. Scientists have come up with a recipe for a real hot pouty look – chilli been used on lip-gloss and cosmetics as it promises as more natural looking colour.  A special type of chilli whose natural colour could be used  in lipstick and other cosmetic items. The new chilli, minus the usual piquant taste, also known by the name ‘Paprika’. In fact, cosmetic giant Estee Lauder at present is also manufacturing a lipstick of this quality with the brand name “Clinique Long Last Paprika”.
So as chilli, as the new beauty product gives us a stinging surprise. We speak to some beauty experts to tell us about some more ‘weird’ natural products used in beauty business.

Curdled up curd

“Lactobacillus Ferment, the bacteria that turns milk to curd is used in whitening ranges. It is a conditioning agent and gives moisture to dry skin. When used with other ingredients it brings luminosity to the skin.

Paprika for a fresh flush

“It may sound weird to use a paprika potion on your face but we have a paprika treatment. Paprika tones the skin, prevents pigmentation and helps to lighten the skin. It  opens the pores, removes dead skin and is a permanent solution for the black /white heads and acne. It is kept as a salon only treatment.
Bamboo for refreshing the skin, “Bamboo is very rich in anti oxidants and thus revitalizes and refreshes the skin and is used in beauty products. It has a very mild lingering smell, just the thing you would want from your beauty potion. Another interesting and effective ingredient is red tea. Just like a cup of hot tea soothes your body, red tea helps soothe your skin with its antioxidant properties.

Beauty buzz

Paprika: The exfoliation with Paprika increases the circulation of blood which bestows a rosy glowing skin.
Ratanjot (Onosma Hispidum): “Ratanjot that is very commonly used as a cooking ingredient, can be used in developing as many as 15 to 16 shades and can be used in colour cosmetics.”

All MEN ARE LIARS

The marrying type got an interesting email recently from a reader in South Africa named Rupert who pointed out a phenomenon he's been dealing with most of his adult life: women want to marry him.

He says (if you do this in a bad Safr accent, it's pretty entertaining): "I'm not wealthy, I don't drive a flash car or even own my own house. I'm certainly not the pushing the boundaries type or the life and soul of the party. I'm just steady and, if anything, quite conservative.

Each time I've been involved with a woman, within a couple of months they start getting broody, insist on using the L word and express their desire to get hitched and play happy families. Then I am forced to pull out my loudspeaker and shriek 'this is an illegal gathering, disperse immediately'," writes Rupert.

Alright, I made up that last sentence ...

Girls, it seems, trust Rupert.

When they meet him they surmise that he's the type to stick around: he's the tin of lentils in the back of the cupboard, Nathan Hindmarsh in the defensive line, David Boon at the crease.

Dependable, solid, a good long-term bet.

Rupert's experience has led him to the conclusion that "there are three broad types of men".

1. Mr Average: Through lack of suitable alternatives or perhaps extreme dedication, these men have girlfriends/wives and, presumably, happy lives.

2. Mr Alpha Male: Women simply want to shag these guys, who are testosterone driven, muscle-bound manly men. Quite often seen with trophy wives.

3. Mr Forever: There's something about these men that flicks the switch to nest in women.

Says Rupert: "Now I'm wondering what it is about Mr Forever that makes women think this way. Is it attitude? Looks? The willingness to spoon your partner in the morning? Or just that I'm safe?"

Bingo, Rupes! You nailed it with your last option. You are safe. I'm also gonna guess that the women you date are over the age of 25.

You see, I reckon most women (and men) have a checklist of attributes they think are the most important qualities for a potential partner to possess.

When we're young, it's often dominated by the way people look, whether they're "cool", have a certain hairstyle, drive a nice car, are a DJ or a skateboarder - you get the idea.

In short, it's pretty superficial and it's got a lot to do with what we assume other people think of us.

If we have a model girlfriend or a boyfriend who's a football player we think we'll be more socially acceptable, that others will covet our lives.

This matters when you're 22.

However, as women move through their 20s, their checklist morphs and things such as "cool tattoos", "rides a motorbike", "can get into all the clubs" disappear off the list to be replaced by considerations like "Is he dependable?", "Can I trust him?", "Will he make a good father?"

By their late 20s, women have gone around the block a few times; they've realised the superficial stuff they chased aged 22 didn't really deliver them happiness or a partner suited to spending the rest of their life with.

Women become pragmatic because, by and large, they want to reproduce.

Females who are not pragmatic about this issue end up single mums or white wine warriors in leopard skin stuck in a noisy bar looking for a doorway that's already closed.

It's not a good look - and most chicks choose to avoid it by mating with safe, dependable men, because DJs and skatie dudes and guys with great hair tend to be more prone to cheat, then piss off and leave them holding the toddler.

It's also why I reckon men do themselves no end of favours fostering attributes such as kindness, integrity, honesty, a sense of humour and community spirit.

Your hair may fall out and your pecs sag but virtues such as these will always make you an attractive proposition to the opposite sex.

As for Rupert's "problem", well, I'd say he has two options: start dating younger women or "alpha-ise" his interactions with the ones he's dating.

Stop being so "safe". And that's a topic for another day.

Red HoT POKER

Mathematics has radically changed the game of chance.

'I am going to raise this one, see if this guy gives me a bit of respect," mutters Victor Wong as he shoves a pile of virtual chips into the middle of the virtual poker table. Instantly his opponent folds and Wong collects his winnings, allowing himself a brief smile before the next hand is dealt and fresh decisions must be made.

Wong is the face of 21st century poker. A software programmer with a passion for maths and statistics, he is about as far as you can get from the grim-faced, cigar-chomping cardsharp of popular imagination. For up to 10 hours a week he plays online the most popular variant - Texas hold 'em - using a disciplined, aggressive system he says earns him an annual profit of a few thousand dollars

Online poker has been popularised in Australia by television coverage and the real-world exploits of players like the Australian Joe Hachem, who in 2005 scooped the $US7.5 million pot in the Poker World Series. But getting a handle on how many play is difficult, not least because it is technically illegal to promote online poker to Australians.

Many of the world's poker servers are in the Mohawk territory of Kahnawake, an Indian reservation near Montreal, and overseen by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission, which is exempt from North American gambling laws. Richard O'Neill, the founder of the National Poker League, which organises poker games in pubs and clubs, claims a membership of more than 200,000. "Our research shows that 50 per cent of them also play poker online for cash," O'Neill says.

However, unlike pubs, clubs or casinos, you are never quite sure who you are playing against online. Indeed, there is a fair chance your opponent is a poker "bot" - an automated software program designed to fleece unwary players. So far the bots are relatively unsophisticated. "They have a very simple algorithm," says Wong, who suspects he has come up against them from time to time.

It turns out creating the perfect poker-playing robot is surprisingly complex. It has long fascinated artificial intelligence experts, who are making big progress. Scientists have already cracked backgammon and draughts, producing a machine that can play the perfect game - the best a human opponent can hope for is a draw - and even chess has largely been solved.

Poker presents special challenges because it is a game of "imperfect information".

"In chess everything is visible - one can see the board, there is no information hidden except for the opponent's mind," says Ann Nicholson of Monash University's IT faculty, who with her colleagues has done a lot of work on poker. "But in poker, depending on the version, some of the cards are hidden. There is uncertainty not just in the randomness of the cards in the deck but also in what people have, what actions they are going to take and what strategies they are going to use."

This uncertainty makes card counting - calculating the odds of cards to come, based on cards already dealt - a much less useful strategy than in games such as blackjack.

A true poker-playing bot must learn from an opponent's playing style and allow for the opponent doing the same thing. "I've got to remember that you [the opponent] are … thinking what my actions tell you about what I might have and I'm thinking about what your actions are telling me about what you might have," says Malcolm Ryan, an artificial intelligence and games researcher at the University of NSW.

"There are these whole cycles of thinking about thinking about thinking."

Nevertheless, scientists are coming closer. The world leaders are University of Alberta scientists in Edmonton, Canada. Their bot Polaris last year beat the world's best players at a tournament in Las Vegas. Even though it involved a simplified form of Texas hold 'em, it was a big breakthrough. The Canadian group is working on a Polaris that would be unbeatable at the unlimited betting version commonly played online. This would pose a big problem for promoters of the lucrative online poker businesses. If punters lose confidence in the capacity of promoters to detect and ban bots, they will go elsewhere. "It's like an arms race," Ann Nicholson says. "People are trying to get their bots in there and not be detected, and people are trying to detect them. And people don't usually advertise how well they are doing if they are beating the systems because they don't want to get caught."

Wong is confident with his half-man/half-machine strategy. His program allows him to instantly assess the strength of his cards against those of many players he is likely to come up against. This information allows him to target weaker players - "fish" in online poker parlance - while staying away from the profitable "sharks". Some programs even track individual fish, alerting stronger players when they come online.

"That's the beauty of playing online," Wong says. "You've got so many tables starting every minute you don't have to play with good people."

Understanding mathematics, he says, has changed the whole game. "In the long-term you can't beat the mathematical edge."

The ultimate Oktoberfest guide

AS FAR as wedding parties go, the one between Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in October 1810 takes some beating.
For five full days, the burghers of Munich were invited to eat, drink and be merry and enjoy parades and music, shooting displays and a horse race around a meadow on the edge of town, in which a tent was erected to house the happy couple and royal entourage.

Such a good time was had by all that it was decided to stage the race (and the accompanying indulgence) the following year. Thus was the Munich Oktoberfest born – an event to which about 6 million people now flock each year to consume stonking great litres of some of the finest beers in the world (only Munich brews are served) and to party in that uniquely Bavarian way (think lederhosen and dirndls; oom-pah-pah and pretzels).

The 200th anniversary of that first celebration is being marked by the city of Munich with suitable fanfare. It has also been decreed that an extra day should be added to this year's festival. Even by Oktoberfest standards, it promises to be quite a party. Here are a few pointers for those wanting to join in.

Just when does the Oktoberfest take place?

Although the festival concludes in October, most of it takes place in September. This year's dates are September 18 to October 4.

Where is it held?

The main Oktoberfest is held on the original meadow, named, in honour of Ludwig's bride, the Theresienwiese (shortened to the Wiesn), a short tram ride from the centre of Munich.
The grand parade
The opening day of the festival is marked by a parade of carriages, floats and people dressed in costumes winding its way through the streets of Munich.

Is it really held in tents?

The structure erected to keep Ludwig and Therese out of the sun – or rain – in 1810 may well have been a tent but the vast ones used today are much more solid affairs with colourful facades, long wooden tables and benches – frequently on more than one level. Some can hold up to 10,000 visitors.

Best time to go?

General hours are 10am to 11.30pm (from 9am on Saturdays and Sundays). It is packed at weekends; many locals prefer to pop in during the week.

Do I have to dress up?

Lederhosen for men and dirndls (traditional Bavarian dress with full skirt, apron and tight bodice) for women are compulsory. Not really – but it's nice to see Bavarians make the effort. If you want to join in, several shops in town specialise in such gear. For a more upmarket designer dirndl look, the Charles Hotel, 28 Sophienstrasse, Munich, is offering Oktoberfest packages including suitably extravagant costumes for the ladies and/or the possibility of a table in the prestigious Schottenhamel tent (+49 89 544 5550, roccofortecollection.com).

Isn't it full of drunken Australians and Brits?

No. While there is undoubtedly an antipodean contingent and plenty of Brits, most tend to be found at the Hofbrau tent. The majority of visitors are from Bavaria or other parts of Germany. For a more rounded feel of the event, try the other tents (there are 14 in total): the Schottenhamel (popular with student societies), the Hackerbrau (decked out in Bavarian blue and white) and the Winzerer Fahndl (complete with beer garden).

Beer necessities

The only beer served comes from Munich breweries such as the Augustiner, Paulaner and Spaten. The most popular variation is the lager-like helles. And there are no half measures: beer is served in one-litre glasses, several of which are typically carried at one time by barmaids. A litre (eine Mass) costs about €8.50 ($12.15) – but you don't need that many. If you decide to pace yourself, ask for a radler (beer with lemonade).

And to soak it up?

Typically, half a roasted chicken with a giant pretzel. Also, bratwurst (sausage), knuckles of pork, freshly smoked fish and lots of colourful gingerbread creations.
Is there anything apart from eating and drinking?
Believe it or not, the Oktoberfest is also aimed at families, with fairground attractions such as carousels, the Olympia Loop ride and shooting galleries.

What's so special this year?

Next to the main festival area will be a separate "historical Wiesn" site dedicated to Oktoberfest history and a celebration of Bavarian culture. Visitors can sample dishes popular 200 years ago, enjoy folk dance displays and whip-cracking and watch racers on vintage cycles speeding around a big top. Open from September 17.
They're off . . .
For the first time since 1938, the horse racing that marked the original celebration is being reinstated, with two races a day to be held next to the main festival area.

Pictures at an exhibition

Munich City Museum is presenting Oktoberfest 1810-2010, an extensive exhibition detailing how a Bavarian celebration "with monarchist overtones" became the world's biggest beer festival. Exhibits include paintings and photographs, beer barrels and mugs, pennants for the winning horse riders and Princess Therese's wedding dress. It runs until October 31. stadtmuseum-online.de.

The lingo

Bavarian is a dialect all unto itself, being heavily informed by the Latin of the area's previous occupants. Here are a few useful terms: O'zapft is! ("It is tapped" – the phrase uttered by Munich's mayor to mark the opening of the first beer barrel); Oans-zwoa-drei-g'suffa ("One, two, three, skol!"); and I mog di ("I like/love you").

Bridesmaids stripped bare

What really goes on at a hen's night?

Before the bride's big day comes the big night. Alice  tags along on a hen's night to find out why women go wild before the wedding.
Dressed in a skimpy frock, hot pink veil flashing with lights, a feather boa and a sash, bride-to-be Jenelle sucks a margherita in a fluoro-lit glass through a straw shaped like a penis, as she listens to the rules on the bus.
Go Ahead company tour guide Daniel gives them a quick rundown: "No boys on the bus - unless they're hot! No chucking on the bus ... No yawning, wear your penises at all times, and when you get pissed, remember the buddy system."
"You're ready for anything in this job," he says. "Last week the girls crowd-surfed me to the back of the bus, then ripped my shirt to pieces. I ended up paying a guy in Macca's 25 bucks to give me his T-shirt."
Twenty friends, relatives, colleagues and future in-laws are along for the ride tonight, before
Jenelle, 28, marries Simon, her boyfriend of six years. She has known some of the women on the bus since she was little - such as sister Kristy, who organised the do. Others are her colleagues, fellow radiographers. In a quiet corner sit her mother, aunt and her soon-to-be mother-in-law.

What really goes on at a hen's night?

Depending on who you talk to, they either involve binge-drinking bar crawls, a day at the races, sex-toy themed parties or heading for spa country to get rolled in mud in the name of relaxation. Either way, their biggest crime seems to be that they're loud, proud and anything but demure.
Although the night on the razz now faces stiff competition from ladylike pampering sessions, where the bride and her friends get their nails done and drink champagne, there's still plenty of interest in giving the bride one last wild night before her big day. The Yellow Pages lists 137 venues, tours and entertainment agencies specialising in hen's nights: the party packs, the veils, the drinks cards, the strippers. For maids of honour planning a do, a typical hen's night costs between $40 and $70 a head upfront, for between 10 and 20 friends.

Giving a hen's night as a wedding gift is in fashion, according to adult superstore Sexyland's sales manager, Rebecca. "People find more value that way; you see an instant reward and it's more memorable than a toaster. They can get quite big - veils and party games and bags are our biggest sellers," says Grech, adding that dildos are more popular with divorce parties.

Hen's nights are a kind of pressure valve, . "For men, it's not unusual to go out in a big group every weekend," she says. "But after high school, women don't really go out in packs ... Women generally prefer one-on-one situations; if they're going out with the girls, they'll go out for dinner. So for something like a hen's night, there's a shared objective: to go wild. And because women normally censor themselves, and may not go out as often, they tend to make the most of it."

Hen's nights as the safest way for women to go wild.

"For women, making it known that they're a hen with the tiaras and veils means that it's safe: that's your time, you can do that. So whether you're pole dancing, or dressing provocatively, there's no chance of someone saying 'You gave me mixed messages'."

In King Street, scores of women in fluoro veils are lining up to get into Mandate, the male strip venue of choice for  hens. Inside, it's dark and smoky, pink
lights illuminating the stage as topless waiters move among the 180 women seated at long tables. "What's taking so long?" calls a hen. "All he's gotta do is get his gear off and wave his big wiener!"
The MC, Johnny, bounds on stage like a stud from the
'80s: tight jeans, denim jacket and all. "Who's horny?" he yells, as a cheer goes up from the audience. He invites all the hens on stage. "Anybody else celebrating? Break-ups? Divorces?"

"My boyfriend's gay!" yells one woman, duly invited up on stage.

"OK! Anybody offended by physical contact?" "Nooooooo!" screams the crowd.

"How about like this?" He grabs a woman and buries her head in his groin. The crowd roars in approval and Johnny introduces Kevin (surely the sexiest stage name of all time), the first stripper of the night, who swaggers on stage dressed as a cop. He begins pleasuring his baton to the tune of Beat it. A group of real police have gathered ("checking liquor licences and venue capacity") at the back of the room. One of them nudges his mate and points to their female colleague. "She's lovin' it!" he yells.

Backstage, Nick the stripper prepares for his fireman routine. "Girls are taught to censor their feelings, that they shouldn't feel that animalistic lust for a body," he says, carefully stepping into a lime green G-string. "But once they get alcohol in them, they've got no inhibitions."
Back onstage, a woman sits in a chair as Kevin performs some serious acrobatics. Gripping just the back of a chair he does a handstand, lowering himself down to lick her neck as the crowd "oooohs". Still in handstand he does the splits, rapidly twitching his butt cheeks one at a time. I can't help but feel that female strippers have it over male strippers in that they have boobs - something illicit that can be strategically revealed. Male strippers must rely on butt-twitching tricks - difficult, but hardly salacious. Kevin finishes his act with a quick frontal flash to the woman on the chair.

So why no full Monty? "It's a grey area," says Nick, slapping on a fistful of frangipani body butter. "Half of the girls don't want to see it and the other half are like 'Show us your cock.' You try and do a happy medium, but you never know if you're going to be aroused or unaroused. And chicks can be cruel."

At 10.45pm, tour bus drivers loiter on the corner of Flinders Lane and King Street. Their talk turns to women behaving badly.
"My lot have already done the titties out the window," says one. "They're just letting their hair down," says another. "Most women are stay-at-home mums and they don't get a chance to get out much, so when they do, it gets a bit loose." A blow-up male sex doll sits beside him, forlorn.
Women spill out of Mandate and lurch for the buses.
It's a group effort to get the hen up the stairs of the double-decker, as she's having difficulty remaining upright. A busty woman waves to us from the top floor, her boobs smushed up against the window. "Strippers were way better in the '80s," she yells, her breasts threatening to break the levies of her low-cut top.
Tour guides move through the crowd in King Street nightclubs, intermittently releasing hens onto the dance floor and gathering them up again for the next venue.
"The fact that you move in between venues every hour helps slow the alcohol process," says Peter M, owner of Go Get Around Tours. "And having a host to move you along takes away any anxiety - there's no negotiation, with 20 people going 'I want to stay, no I want to go.' "
Jenelle C takes a break on the couches. "I was worried that we'd all be a bit separate," she says, "but once we had a few drinks it all came together. Everyone seems to be having a good time," she says, watching her friends on the podium, passing around the veil and trying to spank each other with it.

By 12.30am, the group has shed some of its older members and Daniel valiantly tries to herd those remaining back onboard. "I lost my penis," one woman whines, "it fell out of my cleavage."
"Call it off!" A random passer-by, a well-dressed woman in her 40s, climbs onto the bus. "Take it from me - screw yourself silly while you can!" she says, before falling backwards off the bus. When she picks herself up and bows, everyone cheers.
Daniel arrives with the final stragglers. "Now, who's pissed? Up the front, before you chuck!" A couple of women, let's call them Boozy and Floozy, wobble towards the driver, collapse in a pile and fall asleep."Next song!" calls a girl up the back. "We've HAD that one! NEXT!" A non-drinker sits by herself, looking a bit over it.
Outside, the temperature has dropped and a light rain begins to fall as people try to hail cabs. It's the last time these women will see each other for quite a while and though tired, no one wants the night to end.
"Are you girls going to kick on?" Daniel asks. Boozy wakes up. "Yes," she slurs. "As long as Jenelle's got margherita mix at home, no one's going anywhere."

Red Hot tips - Where to go for help with debt problems

These are the places where you can go for help

·                               Financial counsellors

·                               Dispute resolution schemes

·                               Legal advice

·                               Getting a copy of your credit report

·                               Finding out about bankruptcy

Financial counsellors

If you are having difficulty paying your debts, discuss your options with a financial counsellor. Financial counselling services are available free in every state and territory and can help you to:

·                               plan and manage your finances better

·                               negotiate with debt collectors

·                               manage a debt crisis

·                               overcome gambling problems

·                               evaluate bankruptcy and its consequences.

To find a financial counselling organisation near you look under 'Counselling' on the website or search our Consumer & business directory under the  link. There is a link to the directory in the menu on the left.

Some other businesses also help people struggling with debt however they charge for these services. Make sure you know what service you are getting from these businesses and how much it is going to cost you. You may be able to get  these services for free from a financial counsellor

Dispute resolution schemes

Many industries (such as banking, telecommunications, energy, water and insurance) have their own dispute resolution schemes (sometimes called an ombudsman scheme). These schemes are available to consumers free of charge, and decisions are binding. If you have an ongoing dispute, the ombudsman from the industry you are dealing with may be able to help you resolve the matter.

Legal proceedings against you generally cannot be started while a matter is being considered by an ombudsman, so it is a good idea to raise your concerns with the ombudsman as soon as you think you have a dispute you cannot resolve yourself. Do not wait until legal proceedings have started, as generally it will be too late to refer the matter to the ombudsman and, if you wish to dispute the debt, you will need to file a defence in court.

Legal advice

Many people facing legal problems because of debt cannot afford a private solicitor. Check for Free legal aid and community legal services are available in every state and territory. In some courts, chamber magistrates can also give initial advice to people who have had civil proceedings brought against them.

Search our Consumer & business directory for contact details for community legal centres or legal aid offices in your area.

Getting a copy of your credit report

Your credit report has information about you and your credit history. You might want to get a copy of your report to check that the information is accurate and fix any mistakes. Further information about obtaining a credit file and how to deal with mistakes recorded on your file can be provided by a financial counsellor,

Finding out about bankruptcy

For some people in debt crisis, bankruptcy or a Bankruptcy Act agreement may be an option, although this has serious consequences. It is very important that you get advice from a free and independent financial counsellor or a qualified financial adviser before taking any action if you are thinking about bankruptcy as an option. You can also get information on personal bankruptcy from the website, or the government body that regulates the personal insolvency system .

1. Read the mood of the kiss. If both of you are in a passionate, cloth-tearing mood, go at it with hunger. But, if you are in a mellow mood or simply trying to set up the evening for something more exciting, take it slowly.
2. A kiss is not just the meeting of lips. It is the moment when warmth blossoms into passion. For many couples, this is the moment when attraction turns into romance. Therefore, understand the importance of the kiss before your lips touch.
3. Get comfortable with your partner. Do not crush your partner, even though you feel that the crush communicates your passion. You want your partner to enjoy the kiss, not count the moments to freedom.
4. Most people kiss on the lips. But, one of the best places to start a kiss is elsewhere, like the fingertips, the neck or the earlobes. Even the eyes. Experiment.
5. Work up to the perfect moment. A passionate kiss could feel tepid if the moment is not right, and an inexperienced kiss may seem wildly romantic if the moment is right. Work towards the moment. Give each other THE looks, caress each other gently or hold hands.
6. Enhance the pleasure of the kiss by stroking your partner gently on the face, the nape of the neck, the cheek or playing with their hair.
7. Most people like to keep their eyes closed while kissing. Once in a while, keep your eyes open. Seeing all that raw passion is like making love with the lights on – sexy, seductive and irresistible.
8. Never grab each other while you kiss. Women particularly feel insulted if you grab their tush or other parts. Kiss because you want to enjoy the kiss, not because you want to send feelers or clear the agenda for the evening.
9. A light hug goes wonderfully well with a sizzling kiss.
10. Keep your lips soft and breath fresh for the kiss.
Most importantly, forget all the kissing tips you’ve read and just enjoy what you’re sharing with the special person in your arms.

Male Escorts

Paying for sex is no longer a male preserve. , Mary explores the world of male escorts and why more women want their services.

SHE is well educated, well spoken and very well groomed: an attractive blonde in her 30s used to men hitting on her in bars. So why did ''Eva''* pay a man to have sex with her? And how did that encounter lead her, a single mother with a full-time professional job, into secretly running a male escort business?
About two years ago, fed up with internet dating and the desultory randomness of the bar scene, but missing male company, Eva toyed with the idea of using a male escort.

Ignoring the storm of censorial voices inside her head, all screaming variations of ''nice girls don't do that'' and worse, she started searching online.
''It was very hard; there wasn't much out there. I rang one of the places and they never returned my phone calls.'' She ran hot and cold on the idea for six months.
Then she found ''Steve'', a solo operator online. ''I was very lucky,'' she says, having now a better idea of what is out there (not much). Steve sent her a picture. They exchanged texts. She wanted to ask all sorts of questions about how it would work, but didn't feel confident enough to have those sorts of conversations.
So she leapfrogged her doubts entirely and arranged for him to come to her house.
''It was nerve-racking but I was also excited. The anticipation, thinking, 'Oh goodness, what am I doing?' '' she says. ''When I opened the door, I just went 'phew'. He was gorgeous, beautifully presented and he made me feel at ease. He worked very hard to make me feel comfortable.''

That encounter resulted in Eva and a friend setting up an exclusive escort business, for professional women like themselves who were well-off, but stressed or time-poor and wanted male company and sex on their own terms. About 40 per cent of jobs don't involve sex; the clients just want the male company. For Eva, hiring Steve was an overwhelmingly positive experience that she doesn't regret. But she knows that she is totally kicking against societal and possibly biological norms. Some men pay for sex, always have, probably always will. But women? It's a fraught issue, especially as prostitution is one of the most divisive issues among feminists.
Dr Rosewarne, a lecturer in public policy and sex researcher  , likes the idea of women taking control of their sexuality, of women owning their desires, but isn't sure that women paying for sex is progress.

''It still comes back to this idea of commodifying bodies and that's not gender specific,''
Hiring prostitutes is fundamentally a male preserve, which is why we ''don't see huge line-ups of women wanting to buy the bodies of boys and men''.

Another reason has been that women haven't been in a position to treat men that way. ''Women generally don't have the time or money that men have, nor the sense of social entitlement to the bodies of other people,'' Reist says. She thinks that is changing, but that it is not a positive development.
''It's really the democratisation of objectification. Buying and selling male or female bodies for sex will always be reducing them to a means to an end; a denial of their full humanity.''
Eva also believes attitudes are changing, and see Rosewarne and Reist's misgivings as part of the old-fashioned mindset that restricts women from getting their needs met.
Although Eva was thrilled with her secret adventure with Steve, she was hesitant to tell anyone about it. Despite Sex and the City capturing some of the Zeitgeist of what being a liberated woman today means - if you're white, educated, physically attractive and well-off - Eva argues that in reality women tend not to talk about their sexual needs.

Eva finally confessed to her friend ''Julie'', and was more relieved than she expected that her friend didn't recoil in horror. Julie's reaction was positive: ''That's great! How much better is that? You didn't have to go out all night, didn't have guys sleazing on you all night, the whole internet dating.''
Was it just about the sex? Eva said no. ''We sat on the lounge and he held my hand and stroked my hair and we talked. I enjoyed that as much as the sex, though the sex was great.''

Eva and Julie figured that they were pretty normal, intelligent women and if they were interested in being able to have company or sex on their terms, others would, too, and that male escorts for women could be normalised or at least destigmatised.

In two years of operation, Eva says hundreds of women have used the service, and they are getting so many men wanting to work for them that they have started charging for a full interview. Eva agrees to interview only about one in 10 applicants.
Eva says it's difficult to find a good male escort because it's not enough to be attractive physically. ''The perception of a lot of men who come into this work is it's all about sex, but it's not. It's about making the women feel special,''
She needs more men and older men, in their late 30s and 40s. ''The whole cougar thing is making women more sensitive [saying] 'I don't want to be seen with someone who looks significantly younger than me'.''

So what kind of woman pays for sex? Eva says most clients are in their 30s and 40s though some are older. Most are attractive, professional, normally confident women who go to water when they contemplate hiring a male escort. A lot of Eva and Julie's time is spent reassuring women and answering lots of questions.
She blames this on the fact that women who are very open about their sexual needs or sexuality are ''still labelled and judged''.

''We help women feel good about their choices, give them confidence that if this is something they want to do, they're allowed to,'' Eva says.
What she loves about the business is that so many clients who have agonised over it, contact her afterwards to say it was amazing.

''The feedback I get most is 'that was a whole lot of fun'.'' But they're not about to tell their friends. ''We're still very much in the closet. I think women want to do this, but they're like me, it might take them six months thinking about it before they do it.''

Eva and Julie, are now thinking of ''coming out'', which they are certain would result in business soaring. But they are worried about the implications for their children, the fact that both of them are single mothers, and that going public might make it impossible to keep their current professional jobs.
''Even though what we're trying to do … is an exciting concept, I am obviously conscious of the reality - society's situation - that if I do come out there will be some judgments and possible repercussions,'' Eva says. ''There's a part of me that would really like to come out because I love the idea and would like to see more women act upon and make choices for themselves … to have the same freedoms that men have.''
There are no brothels for women and few male escorts aimed only at women because '' women don't buy sex, they don't need to. If they want sex, they can just go get it for free wherever they want.'' He wonders if male escorts for women will ever become common. Women tend not to have sex without love or affection, whereas men do all the time. ''That's just the difference, biology, and the internet doesn't change that,''

It does seem a contradiction. Everyone understands why men pay for sex, but women? And why is there more stigma for a woman to be paid for sex than for a man?
When women pay men for sex, it doesn't have the same social effect because there is no history of women enslaving men, the porn industry (which she calls the filming of prostitution) is still primarily driven by men's sexual demands. ''There's no social construction of men as sluts who enjoy their own degradation,''

The number of women who hire male escorts is still so small that it has not been much researched, but women undertaking sex tourism has become a big enough phenomenon to be studied.
Sex tourism for women mainly involves Americans and Europeans travelling to places such as Jamaica and Haiti to purchase sex with local men. ''I'm not saying women aren't paying for sex, but the way they do it is different,'' she says. Men will frequently pay for sex for 20-30 minutes and be satisfied. ''Women are almost buying a boyfriend for a week.''
But she says it makes sex tourism no more acceptable when it is women doing the buying. ''It raises a whole lot of power, sex, political issues that I'm not sure we've resolved. It's not a level playing field … These men in Haiti, if you ask them if they had access to a university degree and could be a doctor or lawyer, do you reckon you would be a prostitute to a wealthy white woman?''

But , is it a level playing field for male escorts catering for women, and does that make it OK?

''Aundre'' , 23, has been working as a male escort for two years and, like the other escorts The Age interviewed, has a full-time job. His detailed website offers the ''ultimate boyfriend experience'', from ''an intellectual conversation over dinner'', to ''ground-breaking sex'' from $170 an hour to $1200 for 12 hours.
Aundre says lots of guys talk about becoming male escorts, but most are not focused enough to do it. ''There is demand out there, but it's a niche market.''

''Daniel'' has worked on and off in the sex industry for more than a decade, but has been specialising in just women and couples for the past year. His website states he ''practices the arts of intimacy, control, erotica, tantra, massage, bondage, discipline, cross-dressing, role play, sexuality and spanking''.
He also has a full-time day job, partly because there is insufficient demand and partly because he finds the work emotionally draining.
He says there are few male prostitutes for women because ''women would rather go without sex than face the fear of asking for it from a stranger and paying for it.''
Women ''still think it's not allowed. They can't ask for what they want and they don't get what they want,'' Daniel says.
His clients have ranged from a 19-year-old who wanted to lose her virginity with someone experienced, to women in their 30s sick of dating ''losers''; from 40-plus corporate high-flyers and married women bored with their sex lives, to couples (husbands don't see him as a threat).
''Sometimes you open the door and you see a really beautiful woman and I can't believe how lucky I am: this woman is going to pay to have sex with me.''

Steve, the first male escort Eva hired, ended up working for her. He is the most popular escort and will wine and dine a woman for $250 an hour - or have sex with them for $500 an hour, minimum booking of two hours. A full day can cost $15,000. The escort work, which he keeps secret from most of his family, friends and employer, is paying for his higher education and training.
Steve, who moved here from Europe, , for one-off and regular clients. Sometimes he is hired just to spend the day with a woman and her children - ''looking after the children, walking in the park or with the dogs, cooking a meal together. Sometimes it's to make an ex jealous.''
He says the income is good but not the primary motivator. ''In a selfish way I feel pleasure by giving pleasure and by giving I receive, that's what counts.''
For ''Jeanette'', hiring a male escort was about safely extending her sexual boundaries, doing ''something for myself'' after working full-time and raising two, now adult, children as a single mother.
She found Daniel online and chose him because he was an S&M (sadomasochism) master. She had no shortage of lovers, but hired Daniel regularly over a year because she could be totally upfront with him in a way she couldn't with her regular lovers.
The liberating part was that Daniel was never judgmental about her sexual fantasies or responses, but rather patient, supportive and fun to be with.

''It was a trip to Paris or this,'' Jeanette says with a big smile. ''My life has gone in a direction I would never have imagined. I would never have seen myself doing what I have done in the last few years with Daniel but I am really glad I have and I think it's due to the freedom. There's a lot more freedom for women now.''

Broken penis episode in Grey's Anatomy sparks frantic internet search among men

What is "penile fracture" and "broken penis".

It follows an episode of Grey's Anatomy, Stairway to Heaven, screened in the US on Thursday, in which consultant Mark Sloan - otherwise known as McSteamy - suffered a fractured penis after indulging in sex in the on-call room with Lexie Grey.

According to the episode synopsis on broadcaster ABC's website, the resulting injury sparks intense speculation among colleagues as to who is responsible for his agonising injury.

Sloan, played by Eric Dane, who also stars in Marley & Me and X-Men, is generally considered to be one of the programme's principal heart throbs, who has had romantic trysts with a large number of the main female characters.

His injury is rare but can occur, although it mainly affects young men during sexual intercourse.

A fracture can occur when abnormal force is applied to the erect penis, and results in a cracking noise combined with intense pain.
It is caused by a "tear in the tunica albuginea, the thick fibrous coat surrounding the corpora cavernosum tissue that produces an erection".

10. Keep your lips soft and breath fresh for the kiss.
Most importantly, forget all the kissing tips you’ve read and just enjoy what you’re sharing with the special person in your arms.

Ten tip-offs to avoid travel rip-offs

Nobody enjoys being taken for a ride, but it can happen all too easily when travelling abroad. Some simple strategies to avoid being scammed

It was just before the euro was introduced and we were travelling by taxi from Ciampino airport into the centre of Rome. The driver was charming. He pointed out the sites as we drove into the city, he joked with the children, he even took the trouble to reverse up a one-way street so that we could be dropped off right by the hotel door.

We'd agreed the fare at the airport - 100,000 lire. I gave him the note and turned to take the bags into the hotel. But he called me back and showed me a 10,000 lire note, making out that this was what I had given him. "Signor, you still owe me another 90,000 lire," he said with a smile.

He wasn't banking on the fact that I knew perfectly well that I only had 100,000 lire notes on me, and that a police car would happen to pull up a little farther down the road. He lost his nerve, pretended he had made a mistake and drove off.

This is not a new phenomenon. Travellers have been the victims of scams for centuries. Of course there are plenty of legal rip-offs - such as prices at airports around the world - which it is hard to do much about. But there are things you can guard against.
I've come up with 10 strategies, some based on simple common sense, others requiring a little preparation, to help limit the damage.

1. Be aware when you are most vulnerable
Tired from a flight, trying to adjust to a new environment, anxious about finding your way, unsure what things should cost, or even just delighted to have arrived and in carefree holiday mood - few of us are as alert as we might be when arriving in a foreign city.
Just realising this and remembering that your brain is in a different gear to usual is helpful. The challenge then is to keep a sense of perspective when someone quotes you a price. Even just consciously double-checking with your travelling companion - "does that sound like a reasonable price for a taxi?" - may help.

2. Don't be pressured into signing
The classic example of being pressurised into signing something is the car hire contract shoved in front of you with a couple of scribbled "x's" where you are asked to sign.
Take your time, and double-check what you are putting your name to - there may be a long queue behind you, but you are about to give the desk clerk carte blanche to charge your credit card.

3. Beware the smiling villain

As was the case with my Roman taxi driver, the nicest, friendliest, of welcomes does not guarantee integrity. It's a shame to be suspicious of a friendly face, but it's a greater shame to be taken in by one.

4. Beware of your guide
I don't want to be accused of engendering unnecessary paranoia in travellers, but the reality is that as a tourist, most people you deal with will see you as a potential source of revenue.
Guides and tour escorts may not be out-and-out villains. They are there to look after you; you may even feel that they are becoming your friend.
But it's easy to forget that they may not have your interests at heart. An important part of their income may be the commission they make from carpet factories and souvenir shops.
They may say that they are recommending the best places to you, but they may simply be recommending the places that pay them the most.

5. Be numerate
If you can't do the maths in your head, you are a sitting duck. Double checking a price or a currency conversion will minimise your chances of being taken for a ride. Most mobile phones now have a calculator function or price converter - it might be worth checking yours.

6. Watch out for big numbers
Being numerate is harder (at least in my experience) when you are dealing with bigger numbers. Most of the currencies that used to be based on very small units and required lots of zeros (such as the Turkish or Italian lire) have thankfully either been rationalised or abolished in recent years.
But a few survive: the Indonesian rupiah and the Vietnamese dong, for example, are measured in the tens of thousands. But even working with currency units that are worth tens or thousands of times less than the dollar (such as in Thailand and India) can be confusing.
Watch out especially for extra noughts being surreptitiously added to bills; including credit card bills.

7. Bring small change
Short-changing is a classic way to defraud a tourist, and the easiest way to avoid it is to have the right money. It is not always possible when buying foreign currency to insist on getting plenty of low-value notes. But it's worth trying, and the more chance you have to pay with the right money, the less chance you have of being given too little change.

8. Pin down prices
When negotiating, be sure to set out what is included in the price. Perhaps the hotel receptionist will quote a "final" price, but once the deal is done, you may find that a service charge, tax or breakfast has been added. Likewise, when the reception desk asks if you want a newspaper and a cup of tea in the morning, is this a generous offer of hospitality, or something that comes at extra cost, and therefore a sales pitch?

9. Remember your strengths

Often as a tourist, you will be at a disadvantage when bargaining or settling a bill. The taxi driver knows that you need to get somewhere. But when you are haggling for a price in a shop or market, the shop owner knows that if they don't make a sale, you probably won't come back. As long as you play hard to get, and don't give away how much you want something, it is in their interest to reduce their price.

10. Do some research
Ironically, you are probably most likely to overpay in countries where services are cheap, rather than expensive. The price you are quoted may seem reasonable in your terms, but in local terms it is a rip-off.

Doing some research before you go as to what things ought to cost will minimise the risks of this. Especially in classic areas like taxi fares - is it a legal requirement to use a meter? Is there more than one setting on the meter? If so, which should be used when? A hotel concierge is normally a reliable source of advice on this kind of thing. Generally, though, the classic consumer advice of shopping around locally will obviously pay dividends too

Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD)

What is Female Sexual Dysfunction?

Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) as “the various ways in which an individual is unable to participate in a sexual relationship…she would wish.” FSD is classified into a range of disorders depending on the specific nature of the sexual difficulties a woman encounters. They are:
Hypoactive sexual desire disorder: The persistent or recurrent lack of sexual fantasies, thoughts, desires and receptivity to sexual contact.
Sexual aversion disorder: The persistent or recurrent fear and/or aversion of sexual contact.
Sexual arousal disorder: The persistent or recurrent inability to become sexually aroused, often characterised by inadequate vaginal lubrication for penetration.
Orgasmic disorder: The persistent or recurrent inability to orgasm.
Dyspareunia: Pain during sexual intercourse.
Women suffering from FSD become anxious or distressed about being unable to engage in or experience sexual activity as they wish. However, other women may experience sexual difficulties (e.g. inability to orgasm) which do not cause them distress. These women do not have FSD. Amongst women with FSD, hypoactive sexual desire and orgasmic disorders are the most commonly reported.
There are many physical causes of FSD and these are mainly related to hormone levels and changes. However, FSD is most commonly the result of psychological factors (e.g. relationship satisfaction, depression). Even when FSD is the result of physical factors, psychological factors often contribute to the problem (e.g. women who have difficulty achieving adequate vaginal lubrication or find sex painful may become anxious about approaching sexual encounters, and find it even more difficult to lubricate).

Statistics on Female Sexual Dysfunction?
Research suggests that the majority of women experience sexual dysfunction at some point in their lives, and for many it is an ongoing or recurring issue. A large survey of Australian women reported that 70% had experienced sexual difficulties (including inability to orgasm and not feeling like sex) in the year before the survey. Women over 50 were most likely to experience sexual difficulties, although they were common in all age groups (over 60% of women aged over 50 reported lack of interest in sex, and more than half of women aged 16-49 also reported this difficulty).
Survivors of sexual assault often experience difficulties in future sexual relationships, which may bring back difficult memories of incidents of assault. Women who are pregnant, have recently given birth or are breastfeeding are more likely to experience sexual dysfunction than those who are not. Hormonal imbalances and psychological factors both play a role for these women.
Women also often experience sexual dysfunction following menopause, which is mainly a result of hormonal imbalances.

Sexual dysfunction associated with cancer
Between 10 and 88% of patients diagnosed with cancer experience sexual problems following diagnosis and treatment. The prevalence varies according to the location and type of cancer, and the treatment modalities used. Sexuality may be affected by chemotherapy, alterations in body image due to weight change, hair loss or surgical disfigurement, hormonal changes, and cancer treatments that directly affect the pelvic region.
Sexual problems are reported in many patients with breast and gynaecological (e.g. cervical or vulval) cancer. They are also reported in patients with cancer that does not directly effect sexual organs, including lung cancer (48% of patients), Hodgkin's disease (50%), and laryngeal (60%) and head and neck cancers (39-74%).

Risk Factors for Female Sexual Dysfunction
While sexual dysfunction is wide spread in Australia, it is more common in particular groups of women. Factors associated with sexual dysfunction in women include:
History of sexual assault, rape or sexual coercion. This may be linked to post-traumatic stress disorder
Pregnancy
Childbirth in the past year
Breastfeeding
Menopause
Urinary incontine
Vaginal prolapse
Coronary heart disease
Hypertension, and hypertension medications
Cancer
Spinal cord injury
Depression, and antidepressant medications
Relationship problems
Stress
Fatigue
Previous gynaecological surgery, including hysterectomy and vault prolapse surgery
It is uncertain how they influence sexual function, but you may also have an increased risk if FSD if you have:
Previous posterior vaginal repair
Diabetes mellitus
Oral contraceptive use

Progression of Female Sexual Dysfunction
Hormonal changes, which are the most common physical cause of FSD, tend to occur during and after childbirth and following menopause. Certain medications (e.g. antidepressants, hypertension medication) can also alter hormone levels. FSD is more common in women who take these medications.
Unlike in men, sexual dysfunction in women is most commonly the result of psychological factors which can arise throughout life. There is an immense amount of pressure on women in their roles as employees, wives and mothers. This can lead to stress, anxiety and fatigue, which are all more common in women who suffer from FSD than in those who do not. Women who are not satisfied with their relationships more commonly report FSD, as do those who are depressed.

Symptoms of Female Sexual Dysfunction
FSD impacts on women’s sexual functioning and on their overall sense of wellbeing. It is associated with depression and relationship satisfaction. Although it is not clear whether FSD causes depression and relationship satisfaction or vice versa, it is likely that, at least in some cases, FSD leads to depression and dissatisfaction with relationships. If you suffer from FSD it is also likely to affect your sexual partner, so you may both want to talk to about professional.
The effects on the partner can have important implications. For example while studies are limited, it has been shown that female sexual function can be negatively impacted on by male sexual dysfunction. A study comparing the sexual function of women with partners with erectile dysfunction to those without showed that sexual arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, pain and total score were significantly lower in those who had partners with erectile dysfunction. Later in that study, a large proportion of the men with erectile dysfunction underwent treatment. Following treatment, sexual arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain were all significantly increased. It was concluded that female sexual function is impacted by male erection status, which may improve following treatment of male sexual dysfunction.

End-of-the-week funnies

It's Friday, which means it's time to use one of the many levers available to  us to force the internet to stop funny rates from rising.

1. Are you a single girl? Do you want to meet a European  man? This 'expert' has the scoop on how you can do it.

Where to start with this? She refers to "The European Men" as if they're a  Eurovision band. She says you can meet them "in their sports". But the highlight  is the awkward, scripted interaction between Katherine and Tony. It makes porno  acting look good.

Here's another, where Katherine covers festival time in Edinburgh. Her advice  if you meet an artsy type guy who talks about artsy things you don't understand?  Just nod and say "absolutely". Alternatively, say "Explain." Lordy...

2. Arnold Schwarzenegger is becoming almost as common on  this blog as Star Wars. He's back again this week, with Terminator 2: The Opera.  Brilliant stuff, but a warning that there is a bit of bad language and  violence.

3. Piracy of American music and films in China is really  getting out of hand. They're even passing off Michael Jackson hits and official  Communist Party songs! (The guy who created this must have spent soooo long in  the editing room)

4. What would church be like if they play hardcore dance  music instead of gospel? Based on this video, it wouldn't be that much  different. (Some bad language)

5. Great little Australian short film, The Cook, from a few  years ago, has made its way on to YouTube (disclosure: the writer is a friend of  mine). Occasional coarse language.

Penis Enlargement

Normal anatomy of the penis
Sexual self-conciousness and dysfunction
Penis enhancement
Penile lengthening
Penile girth enhancements

Normal anatomy of the penis
The penis forms part of the male external genitalia and is the common outlet for urine and semen. It consists of an internal root, and the externally visible body and glans.

The root of the penis is composed of three erectile tissues: the bulb, and the right and left crura. These are partially surrounded by muscular tissue. As the erectile tissues continue into the body of the penis, the crura become the corpora cavernosa and the bulb becomes the corpus spongiosum. The corpus spongiosum then expands, forming the glans. The body of the penis is surrounded by loose skin, which is reflected upon itself to form the foreskin covering the glans. The urethra enters the penis via the erectile tissue of the bulb and continues in the corpus spongiosum until it ends at the external urethral orifice.
Each of the erectile tissues contain tiny spaces that can fill with blood. When the penis is flaccid, these spaces are collapsed. When a man is sexually stimulated, a reflex triggers the relaxation of the blood vessels supplying these tissues. This allows greater blood flow and as a result the erectile tissues fill with blood, causing penis enlargement and erection.
The external portion of the penis (the body and glans) typically measures 7.6–13 cm in length and approximately 8.5–10.5 cm in circumference when flaccid. When erect, this increases to 12.7–17.7 cm in length and 11.3–13.0 cm in circumference

Sexual self-consciousness and dysfunction
Sexual self-consciousness has the potential to negatively impact our sexual experiences. It is believed that sexual self-consciousness:
Increases appearance-related anxieties;
Interferes with attention, focus and concentration;
Impairs physical performance; and
Reduces awareness of our own arousals, leading to sexual dysfunction.
While studies are limited, it has been shown that male sexual dysfunction can negatively impact the sexual function of female partners. One study showed that women who had partners with erectile dysfunction had significantly lower sexual arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, pain and total sexual function scores than those who had partners without erectile dysfunction. Later in that study, a large proportion of the men with erectile dysfunction underwent treatment. Following treatment, sexual arousal, lubrication, orgasm and satisfaction were all significantly increased. It was concluded that female sexual function is impacted by male erection status, which may improve following treatment of male sexual dysfunction.

Penis enhancement

It seems that penis size has been a source of male anxiety throughout history and across cultures. Weights have been used by the Sadhus holy men of India and by the males of the Cholomec tribe in Peru in order to increase penile length. Members of the Dayak tribe in Borneo pierced their penises and used decorative items to increase their partners' pleasure. Topinama tribesmen in Brazil used poisonous snake bites to enlarge their penises.
Today in our society, the only consensus regarding such procedures is for the surgical correction of a micropenis – a smaller than average penis than is structurally normal. However, most men requesting penile enhancement surgery have a penis of normal size and function. Typically, these patients interpret normal appearances as abnormal; this is known as psychological dysmorphism.
The indications for enhancement surgery are ill defined and the measures for success are still unclear, but the procedures are frequently performed, often in private settings.

Penile girth enhancements
Some consider penile girth enhancement to be even more controversial than penile lengthening. Indications for the use of these procedures are lacking in the medical literature. Increased symmetry and uniform girth would provide an optimal result, though this is often a significant challenge given current techniques.

Injectable materials

Fat injection
This procedure involves collecting fat cells from the abdomen and then injecting them into several areas of the penis. An increase in circumference of 2.6 cm has been reported with the injection of 40–68 mL of fat. During the injection process, a large number of fat cells rupture or are resorbed, so that only ~10% of the fat cells remain intact.
There is often a trade off between increased size and side effects. If smaller amounts of fat are injected into multiple locations the side effects are minimal; however, only a small increase in girth is gained. As larger amounts are injected, the risk of side effects increases. Complications include the formation of nodules, increased curvature of the penis, unsymmetrical results and other rare conditions. If large volumes of fat cells survive, patients can complain of decreased erectile stiffness as the increased fat overwhelms the firmness of the erectile tissues.

Silicone injection
The use of liquid injectable silicone has not been recommended for penile girth enhancement due to reports of severe complications. Some of these are related to the large volumes required, and others to drifting or distant migration, swelling and distortion, and other reactions. There is also an increased likelihood of damaging the blood supply and nerves, resulting in loss of sensation and erectile dysfunction.
In a recent study involving 324 patients, large volumes of silicone were injected to achieve an increase in penile circumference of 2.6 cm without any reported short-term complications. All patients were reported as fully satisfied; some reported increased erectile function and prolonged time to ejaculation. However, this is only one small study and the results should be evaluated further.

Hyaluronic acid gel injection

The use of this injectable material was reported to increase the size of the glans penis; the injection of 2 cm3 results in a 1.5 cm increase in glanular circumference after one year. Post-operative satisfaction was high with no serious adverse events. However, some believe that glanular enhancement as a separate procedure may be problematic.

Graft procedures

Dermal fat grafts
This procedure involves grafting skin and subcutaneous tissue from the abdomen or folds near the buttock onto the penis. The results are largely dependent on the amount of fat tissue that remains intact. Published studies show inconsistent results one year after the operation, though a 2.5–5.1 cm increase in girth is generally achieved.
Grafting is quite a long procedure; it takes roughly seven hours and has high rates of post-operative complications. Some of the complications include persistent penile swelling, skin injury, increased penile curvature, shortening of the penis and asymmetry, as well as cosmetically unpleasant scarring. There is also a significant risk that the grafted skin may be rejected by the new site, leading to impaired healing.

Allografts
The use of alloderm, a substance created from donated human skin, has several benefits compared to dermal fat grafting. There is greater success in achieving penile symmetry and a lower incidence of adverse effects. However, this procedure is still associated with some adverse events, including fibrosis, infection, and skin and graft loss.

Venous grafts
Venous grafting involves enlargening the corpora cavernosa using segments of a vein normally found in the leg. The penile girth is increased in the erect state only; hence it is more suitable for those men with dysmorphophobia related to the erect state.
In the first report of this procedure, there were no signs of post-operative complications in any of the 39 men who underwent the procedure. However the results have not yet been reproduced, and the technique is still considered experimental.

Symptoms you shouldn't ignore

Too many women don't get treated for common conditions because they don't recognise the symptoms.

Tired, forgetful, sensitive to cold? That could mean an underactive thyroid.

Have a pain under the right breast along with nausea and vomiting? That could indicate gallstones.

Not only do these medical problems afflict women more frequently than men, so do heart attacks and strokes - often overlooked and left untreated by women because the symptoms are different from men's.

Here's a look at some of the issues doctors would like women to know more about:

THYROID PROBLEMS

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland in the neck that helps set the metabolism - the rate at which your body gets energy from the foods you eat.

An underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism, is the most common thyroid disease in women. The symptoms are mild weight gain, fatigue, poor memory, constipation, dry skin, abnormal menstrual cycles and sensitivity to cold. An overactive thyroid, or hyperthyroidism, makes you lose weight, speeds up your heart rate and leaves you sensitive to heat.

Not only is thyroid disease more prominent in women than men, its prevalence increases with age. That's why women should be attentive to these symptoms and not brush off mild weight gain, fatigue and poor memory as caused by ageing alone.

What to do:

Request a blood test for thyroid disease as part of your annual physical. If you do have thyroid disease, your doctor may prescribe thyroid hormone replacement in the form of a daily pill. You often have to get tested a few times before your doctor sets the right dose. Once it is set, you can usually wait a year before testing again.

HEART ATTACKS AND STROKES

Experts speculate that the high mortality rate for women, relative to men, is in part caused by a lack of awareness of the symptoms, which are different from those of men.

Because women don't recognise the signs, they may wait longer to seek treatment, which puts them in increased danger.

If you think you're having a stroke or heart attack or have symptoms that last for several minutes, seek prompt medical attention. The warning signs in women are:

For stroke:

Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body; sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or co-ordination; sudden, severe headache with no known cause.

For heart attack:

Discomfort in the centre of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back that feels like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain; discomfort in other areas of the upper body, including pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach; shortness of breath; nausea, lightheadedness or breaking out in a cold sweat.

The heart association suggests that up to 80 per cent of cardiac events in women could be prevented if women:

Ate a healthy diet.

Kept weight, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar under control.

Didn't smoke.

Exercised at least 30 minutes a day.

ACL INJURIES

Women are more than twice as likely as men to tear the anterior cruciate ligament in their knees, according to the American Journal of Sports Medicine.

Although the reason for that has not been established, a recent study of male and female soccer players, published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, suggests that this may result from men and women using different leg and hip muscles.

Study author Dr Robert H Brophy, an orthopaedic surgeon and assistant professor of orthopaedics at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri, found that male players use muscles that move the thigh away from the body at the hip more than females do, and speculates that it contributes to the difference.

"Programs focusing on strengthening and recruiting muscles around the hip may be an important part of programs designed to reduce a female athlete's risk of ACL injury," Brophy says.

GALLSTONES

Women between the ages of 20 and 60 are more likely to develop gallstones than men, research has shown.

The gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ under your liver that stores bile, a fluid that digests fat. Gallstones form in the gallbladder when substances in bile, usually cholesterol, harden and block the flow of bile through the bile ducts.

Obesity and rapid weight loss are factors in the formation of gallstones, which may be why the risk factors include multiple pregnancies - because they entail gaining and losing a lot of weight.

Symptoms include a constant pain lasting for hours under the right breast. The pain can also radiate to the abdomen, back or right shoulder and can include nausea and vomiting. In severe cases, there may also be fever, chills and jaundice.

Introduction to nutrition and the brain
The effects of different foods on our behaviour and cognitive performance have been known for years without needing to be examined closely – caffeine stimulates the brain; when kids have too much sugar, they turn "hyper"; and chocolate makes us all feel good. For centuries these experiences have been known and our dietary behaviours reflect this.
In recent years the idea of nutritional effects on the brain have been developed further and extensive research into effects of food on brain functions that are not clearly evident or observable have emerged. The effect of certain foods on brain development, mood disorders, cognition (thinking), disease states and ageing has promised to be an essential area of research, development, non-pharmacological treatment and preventative measures.

Energy demands of the brain
The brain is an extremely active organ which demands an extremely high percentage of the overall daily energy requirements supplied by food. PET scans and MRIs show which brain areas are utilising the greatest amount of energy by monitoring the glucose utilisation. This has enabled us to understand of brain development and maturation at different ages.
For infants, 87% of their daily energy intake supplies the brain. In children between the ages of 6-12 years, 30 - 45% of their energy is utilised in the brain. During infancy to early childhood synaptic connectivity is at its greatest rate and therefore glucose utilisation is high. By adulthood, cortical organisation is relatively stable and accordingly the energy demands of the brain decrease to 20-25%.

Food and behaviour
The effect of certain foods on behaviour has been a recent area of interest with the rising number of children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It has been found that a high proportion of children with ADHD are iron deficient or essential fatty acid (EFA) deficient or both.
Other theories regarding nutritional disturbances associated with the aetiology of ADHD include general under-nutrition and the increased amount of junk food that children are consuming from a very young age.

Psychological wellbeing
The effect of poor nutrition can lead to suboptimal functioning indirectly by exacerbation of stress, sleep disturbances and fatigue. Although these states are not considered "diseases" they are daily stressors that effect psychological wellbeing. A flow-on effect exists between fatigue and suboptimal cognitive functioning, in other words, our ability to think is affected. This in turn has a negative effect on self esteem and performance. This is a classic example of a psychological cycle. All aspects of the cycle impact psychological wellbeing which feeds lower self-esteem. It is becoming more necessary to evaluate the function of diet on these factors before turning to medicines.
Food and cognition
Perhaps one of the greatest effects of nutrition on brain functioning is on our cognition (thinking). The effects of poor diet on sleeping patterns, energy and mood all indirectly affect day to day functioning of the brain at work or school. Cognition is also indirectly affected by the development of other brain functions, for example nutrition is essential for the development of the sensory systems such as hearing and vision and the integration of these processes, the sensorimotor system. Sensorimotor systems are the coordination between sensory functions and motor (movement) functions. An example of a sensorimotor function would be seeing a ball (sensory) and putting up hands to catch it (motor). These processes mature before cognition as they are essential components needed for learning and memory. Therefore without full and healthy development of these systems, optimal cognitive maturation is not achieved.
Direct effects of nutrition on cognition are seen during neurodevelopment and then again during the ageing process. At these times especially, nutrients are of utmost importance to optimise the way the brain thinks and functions.

Neurodevelopment

Neurodevelopment begins before birth and continues throughout life. Neurodevelopment is development of the nervous system including the brain. Cognitive maturation is a process of neurodevelopment which involves ‘fine-tuning' the brain into a mature functional thinking system. During life, millions of connections (synapses) are made in the brain as we learn, this is called synaptogeneisis, and is a very important aspect of neurodevelopment. Other important aspects of cognitive maturation are myelin formation (to aid conduction of nerve impulses through the neurons) and dendrite formation (to aid the transfer of information from one synapse to another). The hippocampus as well as frontal and prefrontal cortex are the major areas of brain development required for cognitive maturation.
Nutrients are thought to act as a "trigger" for these brain development processes, without which development is stunted and brain physiology and structure are impaired. This impairment can be temporary if the availability of the essential nutrients are only deprived in the short-term. However, in critical periods of development it may only require deprivation of essential nutrients for a short time before permanent damage occurs.
The nutritional requirements throughout the pre-, neo-, and postnatal stages influence immediate and long term cognitive maturation and performance. At this critical stage of neurodevelopment any insult or stimulus, or in the case of nutrition the lack of, has the potential to permanently damage the brain. The greatest brain growth occurs 3 months before birth up to around 2 years of age. It is at these stages that synaptic plasticity is at its peak and the energy requirements of the brain are maximal. The synaptic connections made during this time impact the way the brain is structurally and functionally organised (cortical organisation) throughout life.
Ageing
A lot of recent attention has been directed towards the effects of nutrition in neurodegeneration. Neurodegeneration can be thought of as the opposite of neurodevelopment. It is the breakdown of synapses and shinkage of the brain (atrophy). Neurodegeneration is an ageing process and is associated with dementia.
The lack of certain nutrients is thought to be toxic to the brain (neurotoxicity), especially in the elderly brain. Undernutrition leads to processes which predispose the brain to shrinkage and neurodegeneration such as uncontrolled neuron (brain cell) death, amyloid-beta toxicity, oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. Research has been focussed on nutrients that may have the potential to protect the brain from oxidation and atrophy, such as EFAs and folates.
Specific nutrient qualities
Different foods provide different nutrients which have different actions in development, maturation, growth and protection of the brain.

Dietary lipids
Dietary cholesterol from dairy products and egg yolks have been associated with brain functioning at all ages. Lipids make up 10% of the weight of the brain and are essential for the proper formation of membranes and myelin. Importantly though, excess cholesterol can build up in the blood leading to disease.

Carotenoids and flavonoids

These powerful antioxidants combat oxidative stress in the brain and this is believed to have a protective effect in the ageing processes. Carotenoids are found in yellow and orange fruits and vegetables especially but all fruits are good sources of flavonoids

Micronutrients

Micronutrients including iron, zinc, choline, selenium, iodine, magnesium, B vitamins, and vitamins A and C play key roles in energy metabolism as well as neurological enzymatic reactions and processes. Micronutrients are specifically involved in producing functional brain lipids, neurotransmitters, DNA and RNA.
Iodine
This micronutrient is essential for the enzymatic formation of thyroxin, without which can lead to mental retardation any age, although it is especially influential during infancy.
Salt and seafood are the best sources of dietary iodine.

Iron

A deficiency of iron is common, especially in females. Fatigue, lethargy, irritability, inattention, decreased IQ and apathy are seen in iron deficient individuals and have been linked to the symptoms of ADHD in children. The inattentive symptoms may be explained by the cognitive maturation delay found in studies of animals deprived of iron in their diets. Furthermore the fluidity of membranes is hardened in iron deficient individuals.
Lean meat and fish are the best sources of iron but other protein rich alternatives also provide this mineral such as eggs, nuts and legumes.

Protein
Protein intake is essential for the production of vital neurotransmitters including; dopamine, noradrenaline, histamine and glycine. One such protein is tryptophan, a precursor for serotonin which has effects on mood and memory.
Protein is largely found in meat, fish, poultry, eggs, liver and kidney, legumes, nuts, sunflower seeds and sesame seeds.

Folate
Low levels of folate (also called folic acid or vitamin B9), a nutrient found largely in leafy green vegetables, are hypothesised to be toxic to the brain, causing brain atrophy. This is especially prevalent in the cerebral cortex of patients with Alzheimer's Disease.
Folate levels have also been associated with positive effects on mood.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 deficiency is related to brain atrophy. Lean beef, salmon and eggs are good sources of vitamin B12.

Vitamin D
Vitamin D has recently been determined to be an important neurosteroid and its receptors are widespread throughout the brain. A deficiency of vitamin D is sometimes accompanied by depression, psychosis and anxiety. Accordingly vitamin D therapy has been shown to provide mood-elevating effects.
A vitamin D-rich diet has been associated with a reduced risk of multiple sclerosis (MS) and has been utilised as an adjunctive treatment in early MS patients. Epilepsy has also been associated with a deficit in vitamin D which suggests its use may be developed as a potential adjunctive treatment for the disease in the future.
Vitamin D is also thought to play a role in the regulation of behaviour. The receptors for this micronutrient are widespread through areas of the brain known to be responsible for mediating behaviour, such as the limbic system.
The best sources of vitamin D include fatty fish, eggs and margarines fortified with vitamin D.

Essential fatty acids
Essential fatty acides (EFA) cannot be synthesised by the brain and are therefore an "essential" part of our diets. Found largely in fish, EFA are necessary for the induction of myelination and providing components of the myelin sheath, which present these nutrients as important regulators of membrane fluidity. Animal studies have found that deficiency of fatty acids can lead to altered blood brain barrier functioning. EFA are also involved in producing neurotransmitters and other important peptides.
Importantly EFA are associated with auditory and visual development. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an essential omega-3 fatty acid necessary for normal neurogenesis and neurological function. DHA is specifically important for visual signalling pathways. Consumption of high levels of DHA during infancy are associated with better visual development.
The effect of EFA in neuropsychiatric diseases such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and dementia are under investigation

Mediterranean diet

Many studies have focussed on the improved cognitive and mood elevating effects in adults who consume a Mediterranean diet; namely a diet primarily comprised of fish, fruits and vegetables. People who adhere to the diet describe better self-rated health which has been found to influence overall energy and vitality

The importance of our diet
The body of evidence to support the positive effects of a healthy and varied diet is large and is an active area of research and development. It is important at all ages to focus on consuming a well rounded diet with all the essential nutrients. This is especially important for infants and children during times of neurodevelopment and then again during ageing when neurodegeneration can compromise health and vitality.

Tips for building a healthy sexual relationship

Having a healthy sex life and relationship are important parts of your overall health and wellbeing. The majority of adults experience sexual difficulties or health problems at some point. Sexually transmitted infections (including human immunodeficiency virus or HIV) and unwanted pregnancy are the most common sexual threats to physical health. There are also a range of emotional factors which can affect your sexual health and the health of your sexual relationship.
Most societies hold expectations about when, how often and with whom individuals should have sex (e.g. heterosexual vs homosexual, and casual vs steady relationships). These expectations generally vary considerably from individuals' sexual practices, desires and experiences, leading many to believe that what they want or do in a sexual relationship is abnormal or unhealthy.

What is a healthy sexual relationship?

According to the World Health Organisation, "sexual health is a state of physical, emotional, mental and social wellbeing in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity."
A healthy sexual relationship, therefore, is one in which the individuals involved are physically and psychologically content with the frequency and nature of sexual encounters. A healthy sexual relationship should involve protection against STIs and unwanted pregnancy (e.g. through condom use), be free of coercion, sexual assault, rape, discrimination, violence and pain. All individuals involved should be aware of their rights to stop sexual encounters at any time and feel confident to discuss and initiate sexual activities as they desire. Healthy sexual relationships may involve periods of abstinence, when sex is not desired or when the desired sexual partner is not available.
In terms of the types and frequency of sexual engagement, however, there is no recipe for a healthy sexual relationship. Peoples' sexual desires, perspectives and histories vary considerably. What is positive and healthy in one relationship may have negative health impacts in another.
Australians engage in a wide variety of sexual behaviours in addition to penetrative. A study of the sexual practices of over 20,000 adult Australian men and women found that:
65% of men and 35% of women had masturbated in the four weeks prior to being interviewed, and 12% and 14% respectively had used a sex toy
37% of men and 16% ofwomen watched X-rated movies
17%of men and 2% ofwomen visited internet sex sites (on purpose!)
17% of men and 14% of women engaged in anal stimulation
Nearly 10% of women and over 5% of men reported a homosexual experience
Around 4% of men and women reported engaging in roleplay, 2% in bondage and 4.5% in anal-oral stimulation.

Clearly there is no normal set of sexual behaviours in Australia and all of the sexual practices listed above are healthy, as long as the individuals involved feel comfortable with them.

What makes a sexual relationship unhealthy?

Physical health risks in sexual relationships
All sexual relationships involve the risk of unwanted pregnancy and STI.While condoms and other contraceptives mean both these threats can be avoided, they are still common in Australian society. Around 20% of Australian men and 17% of Australia women who participated in the Australian Study of Health and Relationships (ASHR) reported having had an STI at some point in their life. More than 2% of men and women reported anSTI in the year prior to the survey. Many Australians do not have a good knowledge of how STIs are transmitted, or the health consequences of them.
While the use of hormonal contraceptives in Australia is high (around 95% of sexually active, fertile women use them), over 20% of women surveyed reported terminating one or more pregnancies in their life. The proportion of Australians using condoms in steady relationships (7.1% and 22.5% respectively for cohabiting and noncohabiting relationships) and casual encounters (41.4%) remains low. Amongst heterosexuals, condoms are usually used to prevent pregnancy rather than STI.
Sexual relationships that involved physical violence, sexual coercion and/or rape are also unhealthy. Unfortunately violence, sexual coercion and rape are common in Australia. Because many people do not report to the police when someone they love abuses them sexually or physically, it is impossible to say exactly how many people have experienced this type of treatment. In the ASHR, one in five women and one in twenty men reported that they had been coerced to have sex. If you are in a relationship where your partner hurts you physically, makes threats or forces you to have sex, talk to a health professional so that you can find support to leave or improve the relationship. Your doctor will be able to refer you to an appropriate specialist.

Psychological health risks in sexual relationships

Psychological factors influence the way an individual feels about their sexual relationships. In every society, particular sexual behaviours are considered more and less acceptable, and those who engage in socially less acceptable (but nonetheless common) sexual practices may experience guilt or discrimination as a result. Sexual relationships generally involve strong positive emotions (e.g. love), but many relationships also involve negative emotional aspects. Physical violence, coercion to engage in sex, and rape have longterm psychological impacts. People who have been sexually abused on average report more sexual difficulties than those that have not been. You should be aware of your right to say no to unwanted sexual encounters (whether or not they involve penetrative sex, touching, kissing or other behaviours), as well as your right to engage in sexual practices you desire (as long as these don't violate the sexual rights of others).
Sexual difficulties are extremely common amongst Australian men and women and are often associated with psychological factors (e.g. women who report dissatisfaction with relationships can also be more likely to report difficulty achieving adequate vaginal lubrication). The ASHR noted thatthe majority of women (70%) and around a quarter of men reported a lack of sexual desire, and significant proportions of both sexes experienced sexual difficulties at some point in the year before the survey took place.
Considerable proportions of women reported experiencing lack of interest in sex (54.8%), lack of sexual enjoyment (27.3%), feeling selfconscious of their body while having sex (35.9%), performance anxiety (17%), being unable to reach orgasm (28.6%), pain during sex (20.3%) and problems with vaginal lubrication (23.9%). Physical pain, selfconsciousness of body and performance anxiety were more common amongst younger women, while the lack of interest and desire to have sex and inability to orgasm and lubricate were reported by more older women.
A significant proportion of men also reported lack of interest in sex (24.9%). Other common sexual difficulties for men included erectile disorder (9.5%), being unable to orgasm (6.3%), premature ejaculation (23.8%), performance anxiety (16%), not finding sex pleasurable (5.6%) and selfconsciousness about their bodies (14.2%). Men under 20 were more likely to report performance anxiety or selfconsciousness than their older counterpart; the likelihood of other sexual difficulties in men increased with age.
Importantly, sexual difficulties experienced by your partner can have a negative impact on your sexual function. While studies are limited, it has been shown that male sexual dysfunction can negatively impact the sexual function of female partners.

How lifestyle affects your sexual relationships

Many things that you do every day will affect your sexual relationship (e.g. going to work, being pregnant, looking after children and drinking alcohol).Stress and anxiety reduce sexual desire and pleasure for men and women. Many people suffer from stress related to their work, their children or other aspects of their life (e.g. one-off events like a death in the family).
Having children has also been shown to influence sexuality. In the period immediately after childbirth, this is mainly related to hormonal changes in women. As children grow up, stress, fatigue and the responsibility of looking after kids all tend to reduce libido.
Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol also affects your sex life. After drinking alcohol, men are less likely to maintain an erection than when they have not consumed alcohol.
If you feel that your sexual relationship is unhealthy, perhaps you need to think, and talk to your partner about, how these lifestyle issues might affect you.

Tips for building a healthy sexual relationship

In order to be healthy, your sexual relationship must fulfill your sexual desires and those of your partner/s. While there is no recipe for a healthy relationship, these tips may help you improve or maintain the health of your relationship:

  • Use contraceptives to protect against unwanted pregnancy.
  • Use condoms to protect against STIs, especially if you have more than one sexual partner or have casual sexual partners.
  • If you or your partner has trouble maintaining an erection, talk to a health professional about whether or not medication will help.
  • If you or your partner has trouble with vaginal lubrication, try using a water-based lubricant, available over the counter at a pharmacy or supermarket.(e.g. if you have trouble lubricating or maintaining an erection, it may be due to dissatisfaction with your relationship or anxiety about sex, not a biological condition).
  • Remember that a wide variety of sexual practices are normal, including homosexual behaviours, masturbation and use of visual sexual stimuli.Consider trying these in addition to, or instead of, what you currently do if you are not satisfied with your sexual relationship.
  • Sex can also include intimate behaviour without genital contact (e.g. kissing and cuddling). This should be an important part of sexual relationships.
  • Talk to your partner. Be open and honest about your desires and level of satisfaction and try not to be judgmental when your partner is discussing their desires.
  • Talk to a health professional (e.g. a sex therapist, marriage counselor or psychologist) about aspects of your sexual relationship you would like to improve. Never use violence or other forms of intimidation to coerce a partner to engage in a particular sexual practice and be aware of your right to say no to sexual practices you are not comfortable with (even if you have done them before)

Women Self-Pleasure - 8 Tips To Increase You Pleasure and Satisfaction

Self-pleasure is good for you and is considered to have actual health benefits. Self-pleasure is great as well girls; you get to do it by yourself, on your own terms, you can also experiment to find out what you like and what turns you on. Unfortunately growing up many women are raised with little information about our genitals, sex and self-pleasuring does not really come naturally for everyone. The secret to bringing each woman to orgasm is different. Women can climax through clitoral stimulation, vaginal penetration or G-Spot stimulation. There is no wrong way self-pleasure we are all different. Here in this article we will just try and point you in the right direction ladies.

1. Setting the mood

If you are going to get the most from the experience you must give yourself plenty of time. I would advise that you give yourself at least half an hour. Get yourself in a relaxed mood; take a bath or pour yourself a generous glass of wine. It is as much about state of mind as it is about technique ladies. Next make sure that you can't be disturbed. That means turning off the mobile/cell, locking the door and if you have children send them round a neighbours. Then get yourself in a position you feel comfortable and relaxed in. Women generally start out on their backs, legs bent and spread apart, with their feet on the ground. Make sure that you have plenty of support and cushioning.

2. Fantasize/romanticize for self-pleasure

This is your alone time and recalling a past sexual encounter or elaborate on a favourite sexual fantasy can really set the mood. If you need a little of bit of help getting started then read an erotic story, look at a sexy publication or even indulge in a bit of adult entertainment. Ladies this is you time anything goes as long as it get the pulse racing.

3. Explore all parts of your body

It amazing but a lot of women really don't know their own bodies at all. Experiment and run your hands all over your body and if some thing feels good then linger there and just enjoy the feeling it creates. Look at your genitals in a mirror (especially if you are unfamiliar with it) and caress the different parts to see what feels good to you. There are the inner and outer labia, your clitoris, your vagina and your perineum.

4. Don't be afraid to play around to find what is best for you

Ladies get those fingers working; use one or two fingers and start to stoke different parts of you vulva and remembering to stimulate your clitoris and labia. Find the rhythm that works for you this means experimenting with pressure, speed and motion. I suggest placing fingers either side of the clitoris and stoking up and down, or placing two fingers on the clitoral hood and rubbing in a circular motion.

5. Life is about surprises

Unless you are willing to open up your mind girls and let yourself be comfortable with your own skin and trying everything you will not get the most from your own body. When self-pleasuring try different types of touch: stroke, tickle, knead or why not even try gently pulling your genitals. Anything goes ladies. Use one or several fingers, the palm of the hand even your knuckles. Don't be afraid it will only take you to a better place.

6. It is a long and winding road

The thought of reaching that climax is all part of the fun. The thought of riding the wave will build the anticipation. You can add to that by enhancing the excitement yourselves girls. Learn to hold on to your sexual excitement by building up and then reducing temporarily the stimulus. Listen to what your body is telling you. Your own body will tell you when you have the right tempo or when a certain tickle feels good.

7. Remain relaxed

As the sexual energy starts to build it is critical to let it take you and not to fight it. Breathing deeply rather than holding your breath will help as will rocking your pelvis as in intercourse will help. I would also suggest rhythmically clenching and releasing your PC muscle (if you are looking for vaginal penetration then a d1ldo will help).

8. Ride the wave
When the climax starts please continue to stimulate through the orgasm. The body start to get more sensitive so lighten up during those first receptive seconds but keep going to enjoy the pleasurable aftershocks. The first orgasm may feel like a blip or a explosion however the more you practice the more range you will develop and understand.

Self-pleasuring is obviously a very personnel thing. It is though something to be embraced and practice will only lead to a better orgasm as you find what works for you. Experimentation through self-pleasure will not only lead to personnel self satisfaction but can only benefit your sex life as you work out what you like and then pass on that information to your partner.
